Prior to your dyno time

Before you spend your hard earned money on time tuning on the dyno, make sure the results will be worth every penny.

  • Make sure you bike is in good running condition. If your bike needs work, don't waste time trying to tune around a mechanical problem, get it fixed first. If your valves need adjusting, or your chain needs tightening (do not over-tighten) or lubing - do it.
  • Make sure your air filter is new or clean. No reason trying to tune around a dirty air filter.
  • Fresh oil and spark plugs make best power.
  • Have a full tank of good, fresh fuel. Make sure it is the same fuel you normally run on the street or on the track.
  • Make sure your chain/belt/driveshaft and final drive fluid are clean and in adjustment.
  • Make sure your battery is fully charged. Low voltage plays havoc with injection and ignition tuning. Also make sure you can either turn off the headlights or pull the fuses/relays while on the dyno. This helps keep the battery charged.
  • Make sure your tires are correctly inflated.
  • Check your coolant. Each run needs to start at the same engine and oil temperature to be repeatable. The better your coolant performs, the more repeatable the results will be. Old coolant or coolant with too much antifreeze will not cool at optimum efficiency.
  • Brake drag. Due to normal manufacturing tolerances, it is not uncommon to have brake calipers that are slightly off set and can lightly drag a pad on one side of the brake rotor. This is especially true with rear calipers or when using aftermarket brake pads. A thin piece of shim stock under the offending side of the caliper is and easy and cheap fix.
  • And lastly, have a good time.
